Low and Moderate Risk Areas (FEMA Zones B, C, X) More explanation of much of this information on flood zone categories can be found on government flood resources. A 100-year flood area is one in which there is a 1% annual chance of flood and a 500-year flood corresponds to a 0.2 percent chance on average. To better understand what each flood zone means for a property’s likelihood of flood, FEMA maps often use the terminology of “100 and 500-year flood zones”. “D” labels undetermined flood zones, where flood risk exists but is unmeasured. ![]() High risk areas are started by either “A” or “V”, low and moderate flood risk areas begin with “B”, “C”, or “X”. Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) are the areas that are at the greatest risk of flooding, mudflow, or flood-related erosion. The type of flood zone that you are in affects the cost of flood insurance policies and flood insurance is mandatory in some flood zones. The maps are also unable to account for pluvial surface flooding caused by intense rainfall. Unfortunately, FEMA flood maps often struggle to fully account for changes in flood patterns due to climate change. Your flood zone can provide crucial information on the physical and financial risks to your property as a result of flood. For more information on reading a flood zone map, see our full FEMA flood maps guide which describes the terminology of flood maps, how to use them, and their connection to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). You can locate your flood map using your street address through the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, or you can assess all your current as well as future climate risks with the ClimateCheck property report. Many private insurance companies offer Excess Flood Protection, which provides higher limits of coverage than the NFIP, in the event of catastrophic loss by flooding. What if I want to purchase more insurance than the NFIP offers? If you do not purchase flood insurance, the lender will purchase a policy on your behalf, which could be at a much higher rate. Note that if during the life of the loan the maps are revised and the property is now in the high-risk area, your lender will notify you that you must purchase flood insurance. If the property is not in a high-risk area, but instead in a low- to moderate-risk area, the law does not require flood insurance however, it is recommended since historically about one-in-four flood claims come from these low- to moderate-risk areas. The purchase of flood insurance is mandatory to qualify for Federal or federally-backed financial assistance for the acquisition and/or construction of buildings in high-risk flood areas (Special Flood Hazard Areas). Catherine’s War was initially published as a novel in French, and this graphic novel version of the story has been translated into English from French as well. Circumstances were such that she could not be a practicing Jew, but she holds onto her Jewish roots throughout the book. Catherine’s story is a Jewish story: Catherine is always Rachel beneath her Christian façade. Rather, the book’s tension comes from Catherine’s moments of fear and sorrow, all of which are relatable to middle grade children. There is little depiction of violence and Catherine does not face the terror of deportation or concentration camps. The intended audience is children ages 8-12, and the book hits that mark well. Both Billet’s and Fauvel’s level of research is apparent in the text’s details and the illustrations’ realism. Even so, the book realistically depicts France during that time period and is rooted in a deep understanding of the era’s historical context. While the story is based on the memories of Julia Billet’s mother, Billet admits that she “used quite a bit of artistic license” in creating Catherine’s War. This true story about a Jewish girl hiding with the help of the French Resistance gives voice to a part of the Jewish experience that has not often been told. The reader may forget the names of Catherine’s saviors, but their courage and nobility, and Catherine’s strength, linger long after her journey ends.Ĭatherine’s War takes a well-trodden path in children’s literature, the story of an individual Jew during World War II, and breathes new life into the genre. However, Billet infuses the text with displays of remarkable human connection and compassion. Individual characters do not stand out in the story. Catherine’s War moves along at a quick clip, and the author doesn’t inform the reader about what is happening in the wider war or how the network of hiding places develops. ![]() Also impressive are Fauvel’s black and white ink drawings of Catherine’s photographs, which capture small moments and vivid emotions of the book’s characters. Fauvel uses a muted palette of browns, greens, and grays to emphasize the fatiguing nature of Catherine’s life as she must relocate again and again. This graphic novel is based on the wartime experiences of author Julia Billet’s mother, with lovely, expressive illustrations by artist Claire Fauvel. Along the way, she chronicles both the chilling transformation of her country under Nazi occupation and the bravery of everyday heroes on her journey. Armed with nothing but her camera, Catherine moves from hiding place to hiding place. But as the Nazis’ grip on France tightens, Rachel is forced to change her name to Catherine Colin and flee. Rachel loves her school and teachers, and it is at Sèvres that she discovers a passion for photography. ![]() Set in 1942 France, Catherine’s War tells the story of Rachel Cohen, a student at the Sèvres Children’s Home outside of Paris.
